Atlantis: The Lost Empire In Unreal Engine

An exercise in exploring custom Metahumans in Unreal Engine 5.6

The Initial Concept

Recently, Unreal Engine 5.6 was released! This was really exciting for me, because it came out with a lot of new features for Metahuman Customization, all of which can happen in-engine. As a result, I decided that I wanted to explore these new features by creating a small project.

I'd always been drawn to Atlantis: The Lost Empire as a kid. Kida, one of the main characters of the movie, is so iconic in her design, so I wanted to see if I could recreate her as a Metahuman, and then animate her acting out a small scene from the film!

The Process: Metahuman Creator In Unreal Engine

The first step, naturally, was to create our Metahuman version of Kida! Now that the Metahuman Creator is in-engine, there's no need to go to the browser and work from there, which is neat!

Once I opened up the Metahuman Creator, it was time for me to start shaping it into Kida! This process didn't take too long, as Metahuman Creator comes with a bunch of sliders that you can use to adjust things to your liking. What's mindboggling is that there are about 150 different skin textures to mess around with! So much detail!

The Process: Modelling Clothing In Blender and Jinny

Now this was the trickier part. How was I going to make her clothes? There are many ways to do it, but I opted to use Blender (For her top) and Jinny 3D (For her skirt). The rationale here was that I wanted to practice some 3D sculpting, but also see what would also be possible with Jinny 3D, which is similar to Clo3D but much more user friendly (If I'm not mistaken, they're both made by the same company).
